Weekend Recap

Is PSG going to win another title this year?  They certainly made a nice statement this past weekend in front of a packed stadium in Marseille.  Marseille took a 2-1 lead into half time on the back of a brace from Gignac.  Shortly after the start of the second half, Marquinhos leveled the score.  Morel then unfortunately turned the ball into his own net giving PSG all three points and putting themselves on top of the table.  Lyon had temporarily jumped to the top of the table and now only remains one point behind Paris.  It should be a great race to the finish line.  Marseille now sit 5 points from the top.  They maintain a 3 point lead on Monaco, but it could get interesting if Monaco strings some wins together.

Juventus continued to stroll towards the Serie A title as they beat Empoli 2-0.  In the games featuring teams in the top 6, Fiorentina and Roma got all 3 points while Sampdoria and Napoli lost out respectively.  Lazio also beat Cagliari 3-1.  Roma and Lazio have given themselves some breathing room in the race for Champions League.  Fiorentina now sit just 6 points behind Lazio.

Der Klassiker took place this weekend in Dortmund.  As if it was written, Robert Lewandowski scored the only goal in the game to give Munich the 1-0 win over Dortmund.  The win sees Bayern maintain their 10 point lead at the top.  Wolfsburg kept pace, as they beat bottom club Stuttgart 3-1.  Monchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen both scored 4 goals en route to easy wins over Hoffenheim and Hamburg.  They both remain in the Champions League places.  Schalke and Augsburg played out to a 0-0 draw which sees both teams fall further behind in the race for Champions League.

In Spain, all the talk centers around Cristiano Ronaldo and his stunning 5 goal performance as Real Madrid beat Granada 9-1.  For a little while, this closed the gap on Barcelona.  Barcelona took their time, but eventually Matheiu put the blaugrana ahead and Barcelona won 1-0 over Celta Vigo.  Atletico climbed back into third as they beat Cordoba 2-0.  Valencia dropped to fourth as they were held to a 0-0 draw against Villarreal.

Lastly in England, Arsenal made a giant statement.  They scored 3 goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half against Liverpool en route to a 4-1 victory.  They now sit in second place seven points behind Chelsea.  Chelsea got another 3 points to bring them even closer to the title.  However, probably the goal of the season took place when Charlie Adam scored from 66 yards out in a stunning strike.  Manchester United jumped up to third as they beat Aston Villa 3-1.  Manchester City is yet to play and can retake second place with a win today.  Sunderland won the Tyne-wear derby on another stunning strike from Jermaine Defoe.
