Boring football wins trophies, or is boring football not winning games. This past weekend, Jose Mourinho heard chants of boring, boring football ring down after the match against Arsenal. However, that 1 point means that they were two wins away from the title. They are now just one win after coming back to beat Leicester City 3-1 during the midweek. Mourinho came back to Chelsea to win titles and trophies and he has done that within two years. His style may not get all the plaudits, but let’s look at some of the players on his team this year. Diego Costa could have finished as the top scorer if he was not injured, and yet is only two goals behind Aguero. Eden Hazard was the Player of the Year. Cesc Fabregas has the most assists in the league and has been one of the best creative players of the season. While you might not like his tactics in the big games, he gets results and will win the trophy this year and is creating a monster.
The English Premier league and Serie A title should be all locked up.
In England, Chelsea will be champions with a win over Crystal Palace. They should easily get the needed points. The race for second place is on between Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United. United host West Brom this weekend. Arsenal travel to Hull City. Hull are coming off the back of a big 1-0 win over Liverpool during the week. Manchester City plays in the matchup of the weekend when they travel to London to face Tottenham. While the race at the top seems all but over, the race at the bottom is heating up. Leicester will look to rebound following their loss to Chelsea when they host Newcastle, who is slowly slipping back into the relegation race. Burnley travel to West Ham in desperate need of points. QPR travel to Liverpool. Sunderland hosts Southampton. A win for any of these teams will go a long way to keeping them in richest league in the world.
In Italy, Juventus can win the title with just a point this weekend. Napoli need points and in a hurry. They are currently 5 points behind Roma. Napoli host Milan. Roma host Genoa. Lazio are a point ahead of Roma and travel to Atalanta. The relegation battle seems all but done as Parma are going down. Cagliari and Cesena are both 8 points behind Atalanata who are another 4 points behind Sassuolo. This seems to be insurmountable.
In France, PSG won their midweek game to go 3 points clear at the top of the table. Lyon can move level on Saturday with a win when they host Evian. PSG travel to Nantes on Sunday with the chance to go either 6 or 3 points clear. Monaco and St. Etienne are battling for the last Champions League places. Monaco host Toulouse on Sunday. St. Etienne travel to Bastia. In the relegation battle, Lens and Metz are all set to go down. Evian is in the last relegation place but are only one point behind Caen, Lorient, and Stade Reims.
Bayern Munich is the champion of Germany. The Champions League spots are also set as Wolfsburg, Monchengladbach, and Bayer Leverkusen. The interesting race in Germany is the relegation places. Stuttgart sits on the bottom but is just 2 points from safety. Paderborn is in the other relegation spot but are just one point from safety. Hamburger, Hannover, and Freiburg are all in the battle. Pederborn and Freiburg face off this weekend in what is sure to be a huge relegation 6 pointer.
Lastly in Spain, there was a midweek round of games. Barcelona put 6 goals past Getafe to ensure they stayed at the top of the table. Real Madrid won 3-0 to stay just 2 points behind Barcelona. Atleti are now firmly in third place with a 1-0 win over Villarreal. Valencia was only able to get a point following a 1-1 draw at Rayo. This means that Sevilla has pulled level on points following their 3-1 win at Eibar. This weekend, the big matchup takes place in Sevilla when Sevilla host Real Madrid. Barcelona travel to Cordoba. Any dropped points by either team will be huge. Valencia will hope to go three points clear of Sevilla as they host Eibar. Cordoba and Granada look set to be relegated this season. Deportivo are in the last place but are 2 points behind Almeria and Eibar. Deportivo hosts Villarreal this weekend. Almeria could be in the relegation zone by the time they play on Monday when they host Celta Vigo.
